We’re excited to announce our LGBT Summer Sports and Movement Programme!
MYPAS is running a sports and movement programme this summer with LGBT and questioning young people who are 12-21. A wide variety of activities will be offered to offer supported sessions of a variety of activities.
LGBT young people have a different relationship with movement than their peers – this could be due to gendered sports provision, distress around their bodies, feelings of not belonging, preconceptions about the kinds of people who play sports or are good or welcome in sports. They also often have worse health outcomes, both physically and mentally, and it’s well known that sports and movement can play a part in maintaining both good physical and mental health.
In Midlothian this year, young LGBT people have told MYPAS that they “didn’t realise they could play sports”, “don’t know any LGBT people who do sports” and “don’t know where to start”. The aim of this programme is to provide safer places for LGBT young people to try out sports, movement and activities that might work for them in a space that isn’t gendered, where it’s okay to not know things, where having fun is more important than being good and where there will be LGBT or LGBT informed staff and coaches. We’re hoping to be able to signpost the LGBT young people to relevant clubs or provide further opportunities to continue activities they’ve enjoyed.
